Barbados is a tiny little island in
The
Caribbean, a little
bit like England with a whole lot more. In Barbados all the
name places are there like Hastings, Dover, St. Lawrence,
Scotland District, Trafalgar Square (which incidentally we
had 32 years before the one in London) with its own statue
of Nelson.
Barbados boast of having the second highest literacy rate
in the world, we have some of the most friendly people and
the spoken language is English although at times you may
struggle to understand the locals if they are talking amongst
themselves. There are over 50 denominations on the island and
as you all know Cricket is the principal religion and a host
of other sports coming a close second – Netball is one
such.
Netball is played extensively in schools and
at a very high standard. The National team is ranked about no:
14 in the world. The sport has it own Stadium at Waterford
(soon to be refurbished) which is run by the National Sports
Council.
Barbados attracts over 60 netball tours a year mainly
at Easter and during the peak summer months. English Team
touring are sometimes surprised by the style of play which is
a bit more vigorous than what they are used to in UK.
The Barbados Schools Netball Tournament
29 March – 08 April 2010 |
After many years going back to the eighties and by popular demand,
Sporting Getaways have decided to have another look at a
Netball in the Caribbean for Schools. The
tournament will take place at Easter next year. We are going
early so that those students who may have exams will be able
to get back in time to do a bit of revision.
